Ten members of the class of sugars have been investigated in the powder form for second-harmonic generation at two wavelengths, 1.064 μ and 532 nm. Phase-matching cut-offs below 266 nm cannot be ruled out for five of these materials. Of these, four were found to have small nonlinearities. One powder,

-lactose, was found to be a potentially useful nonlinear optical material below 266 nm.
