Abstract :
The high-power auroral stimulation (HIPAS) ionospheric heater facility located 50 km east of Fairbanks, Alaska, has recently been made operational and available to the scientific community. Observations of extremely-low-frequency (ELF) signals generated using the HIPAS ionospheric heater are presented. These observations were the first to be made with this facility and help to demonstrate its early success. During the period of June 10-June 25, 1987, extensive experiments were performed to evaluate the scope of applications for studying the high-latitude ionosphere and the polar electrojet current system. Results of ELF stepped-frequency, polarization, and beam-steering experiments are described
