Abstract :
A methodology for classification of instrumentation, control, and electric systems and equipment based on importance to safe plant operation is discussed. The methodology is based on relating required system reliability to overall plant risk. Through use of a simple example, it is shown that, while technically appealing, the methodology appears to be too complex to be imbedded in a system classification standard.
