Abstract
This article presents an overview of the changes taking place in the electric utility industry and goes on to describe the characteristics of existing software packages used in operations planning and the need for a change in the approach to operations planning and management. The article describes a solution for some of the needs emerging in the near term and offers some possibilities for future development paths. EPRI´s new PC software applies decision analysis to bulk power transactions, helping electric utilities manage risk and returns in an increasingly complex market. EPRI´s goal in creating this tool was to provide a state-of-the-art decision support system to its customers.<>
