Abstract :
This paper presents analytical evaluation for performance characteristics of a three phase induction motor when fed from a single phase supply. Starting as well as running of such motor are achieved by connecting a capacitor across two of stator phases in a way to act as a phase converter. Symmetrical components concept was employed in the analysis. The influence of capacitor value on motor characteristics is being investigated showing that there exists an optimum value of capacitor for a specific characteristic. Formulas are then derived for calculating these optimum values and recommendations are given for proper choice of capacitor rating and value.
