Despite a long and troubled evolution, color LCDs are now the leading display technology for laptop computers, where inventories are growing and prices are dropping. The author takes an historical look to see how this colorful menagerie is evolving technically to bring high quality displays to the laptop computer, while meeting the requirements for lower cost and power consumption.<>
