Abstract :
The image of the blue-green Earth, surrounded by a sea of space, is a poignant legacy of the space age. It shows the Earth as finite, insignificant and fragile, and highlights the precarious position of its inhabitants and their environment. At a time when industrialised nations are taking an ever-increasing interest in the state of the planet, the realisation is dawning that the best vantage of the Earth is gained from space.
