Abstract :
We applied the forced Rayleigh scattering technique to study laminar and turbulent flows. We recorded the optical Fourier transform of a transient grating created in a flowing liquid. Depending on the type of detection used, FRS provides either a direct measurement of velocity gradients or the determination of an effective turbulent diffusivity. Experimental results in a plane Poiseuille flow are given.
