Abstract :
A review is presented of the characteristics of large-scale toroidal and solenoidal coils (>10 MWh, or 36 GJ) to establish a basis for quantitative estimates of the material requirements for these two SMES (superconducting magnetic energy storage) systems. The size dependence, the scaling features, and the estimated costs for major material components are compared. Results show that requirements for major materials in the toroid exceed those for the solenoid by factors from two to more than five, depending on size and assumptions
