Abstract
This article, which is the tenth in a series, addresses four of the most frequently asked questions from engineers working in industry. The authors will present both theory and application information with a reference list that will help working engineers increase their understanding and knowledge of motors. This article focuses on lightning arresters, surge capacitors, terminal boxes, bearing types, torsional resonant conditions, and lubrication. The first nine articles of this series are published in the IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference records and in IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications. This article series also serves as a reference for those who apply and specify motors. This primer will focus on four subjects that have been answered before but continue to be of concern to motor users.
