Abstract :
This paper studied the effect of lens aberration on coupling efficiency and loss penalty due to misalignment for a laser diode to single-mode fiber couplers. The theoretical results were in very good agreement with experimental values and the validity of the present analysis was confirmed. The paper made clear that coupling loss is dominated by aberration and proposed some basic approaches to improving coupling efficiency.
