Abstract :
Reviewing 1987 developments, the author focuses on what did not (or almost did not) happen, the foremost being IBM´s Operating System/2 (OS/2), which barely made it to the market; the failure of computer-aided software engineering (CASE) to define itself and convince the industry of its importance; and poor sales of AI hardware and software. He also discusses Display PostScript, a version of the PostScript graphics-description language that is modified to generate and manipulate text and images displayed on a computer monitor. An expert opinion is offered by J.C. Browne, past chairman of the computer science department at the University of Texas at Austin, who describes the profound changes that he believes lie ahead in the development of computer systems and examines the technologies that will allow these changes to occur.<>
