Abstract
The generic standards were devised by CENELEC to allow manufacturers to show compliance with the EMC directive. Product standards, where these exist, take precedence over the generic standards. Generic standards are based on the electromagnetic conditions existing at typical locations. They are the result of compromises between widely different views among the European countries. They depart from earlier standards by having a simple form, new performance criteria which relate to the manufacturers specification of a product and by referring to basic standards for measurement methods. The generic standards are still being drafted or are in the process of revision
