Abstract
Large superconducting magnets are under study for physics detectors at the future colliders, SSC in the US and LHC in Europe. These include both solenoids and toroids in a wide range of characteristics. A comparison of the various designs is presented, with special emphasis on the basic concepts and on their relevance to critical issues such as stability, safety and practical feasibility
