Abstract :
Results for the sensitivity of preamplifier ASK and limiter-discriminator FSK systems are presented. The best sensitivities for a 10-9 error rate are 76 (ASK) and 79.8 (FSK) received photons. The FSK system allows easy threshold setting and simple optical filter design. Both types of system are suited for system design with significant phase noise.
