Abstract :
A tribute to two (2) of the Electromagnetic Launch (EML) technology pioneers who passed away since the 16th EML Symposium in Beijing, CHINA was held as a part of the Symposium banquet at the La Jolla Torrey Pines, San Diego, CA. Drs. Henry Kolm and Richard Marshall were technical rivals, but both were intellectual giants with a broad range of interests beyond EML science and technology. They laid the foundation on which our EML technology advancements have been made. Drs. Kolm and Marshall were awarded the first IEEE Peter Mark Medals in recognition of their outstanding research on Electromagnetic Launch technology at the 2nd U.S. EML Symposium in Boston, MA in 1983. Dr. Henry H Kolm was a senior scientist and researcher at MIT in the fields of physics and electromagnetism. At MIT he founded the National Magnet Laboratory and was recognized for his many inventions and contributions to science such as the development of world record electromagnets, high-gradient magnetic separation and water filtration, high-speed MAGLEV transportation systems, and development of electromagnetic aircraft catapults and projectile launchers. Upon retirement from MIT, he founded several companies and was named “entrepreneur of the year” by Money Magazine. He served on the U.S. National EML Advisory Panel which helped launch the U.S. National Program on EML technology. He received the IEEE Peter Mark Medal for his pioneering research on electromagnetic coil launchers. Dr. Richard Marshall was a pioneer in developing the science and technology of electromagnetic railguns. His seminal research at the Australian National Laboratory (ANU) in Canberra, Australia set a world record in launching an intact projectile to almost 6 km/s was the first demonstration of achieving hypervelocities by any type of electromagnetic launcher and laid the ground work for a broad range of research in pulsed electromagnetic power and hypervelocity physics. Dr. Marshall served on the U.S. Nation- l EML Advisory Panel which helped launch the U.S. National Program on EML technology. He received the IEEE Peter Mark Medal for his pioneering research on railguns.
