Abstract :
Bucking of a high field solenoid with a torus is proposed as a method to increase the field capabilities of multiple pulse magnets. The purpose of the toroidal magnet is to apply radial loads to the solenoidal magnet. Because of the relatively low value of the out-of-plane loads, the toroidal magnet needs to be only in the bucking configuration. The region inside the toroidal magnet may be filled with structure to help support the relatively low out-of-plane loads. In order to obtain the most benefit from this approach, the toroidal and the solenoidal field magnet are energized by the same current. In this paper, numerical calculations of the performance of such a magnet will be presented. Designs for the toroidal magnet will be described. Calculations of the maximum fields achievable with this configuration will be presented
