Abstract :
A versatile Magnet Measuring Device is described, that produces large maps of the three field components in a volume of 2.7 m×1 m×1 m. Its main components are: the machine itself, which is based on a large granite table with slideways and air bearing shoes; the probe arm (up to 4 m long); the 3D probe head with three orthogonal hallplates. The straightness and flatness of the table and slideways is ⩽5/μm, the position accuracy is better than 50 μm while measuring “on the fly” with the 4 m long probe arm. Four applications are discussed: two dipoles, an electron cooling device and a large solenoid detector
