Abstract
A gaseous absorption cell variable attenuator for 10.6-μ-wavelength radiation, which uses forced convection to eliminate thermal defocusing effects, is described. The device is capable of attenuating high-intensity CO2 laser radiation with negligible distortion, and results are shown for an experimental model used at an intensity level of 100 W/cm2.
