Abstract
EM analysis of a microstrip patch antenna (MPA) loaded with frequency selective surface (FSS) based superstrate is presented in this paper for directivity enhancement. The proposed antenna is analyzed based on transmission line analogy and reciprocity theorem. For efficacy of the approach, the radiation characteristic of a rectangular MPA is validated with that of reported result. A good agreement is obtained between computed and reported results. The double square loop FSS is used to design the superstrate for the antenna. The proposed antenna exhibits a directivity enhancement of 3.4 dB in E-plane and 3.32 dB in H-plane as compared with that of conventional MPA. The proposed antenna can find applications on low observable platform.
