    This book, written by the inventor of the Physical Theory of Diffraction (PTD), introduces readers to Physical Optics (PO) and PTD for acoustic and electromagnetic applications. Topics covered in this 14-chapter book include: essential terminology; the wedge solution; the PO part of the wedge solution; obtaining the PTD (nonuniform) by taking the exact field minus the PO (uniform) field; PTD applied to a strip and a triangular cylinder; acoustic scattering; high-frequency asymptotics for elementary edge waves (EEWs); ray and caustic approximations for edge-diffracted waves; grazing incidence, multiple diffraction and slope-diffraction effects; diffraction interactions between two edges; acoustic caustic and multiple diffractions between two curved edges; focusing effects and multiple diffractions on a circular disk; backscattering by a finite circular cylinder with flat end caps, for the acoustic and electromagnetic cases; and the finite cylinder for the bistatic case. The book collects the fundamentals of PTD into an efficient and self-contained volume. Chapters are organized so that each one lays a foundation for the next. Chosen applications are highly suited for demonstrating the principles of PTD. The homework problems involve proofs and derivations of analytical results, as well as calculation exercises that help the reader appreciate the consequences of certain approximations in the theory.
