Abstract :
A new powder-in-tube (PIT) Nb3Sn conductor is presented for applications in a very high magnetic field. The new PIT Nb3Sn conductor replaces the conventional NbSn2 intermetallic powder approach with a high-tin, Cu5Sn4 intermetallic powder. Micron diameter Cu5Sn4 intermetallic powder is introduced into Nb-tubes and processed utilizing a novel octagonal conductor design. The novel conductor design, the microstructure of the heat treated strand after various temperature and time conditions, and the corresponding non-copper critical current density are presented.
