Abstract :
A two-dimensional taper is fabricated in rib-loaded silicon-on-insulator waveguides to couple light from high-numerical-aperture fibers. Significant improvement in coupling efficiency is achieved. There is excellent agreement between measured and calculated coupling loss values.
