Abstract
By using a 275kV, 150MVA reactor, interrupting tests, were conducted on an opening resistor-fitted air-blast circuit breaker, a two-pressure SF6 gas-blast circuit breaker, and a puffer-type. SF6 gas circuit breaker. Maximum overvoltages generated on the reactor were 1.95 PU with the puffer-type SF6 gas circuit breaker, 2.27 PU with the two-pressure SF6 gas-blast circuit breaker, and 1.71 PU with the opening resistor-fitted air-blast circuit breaker. The test results indicated that arc voltage had a great effect on overvoltage. With the puffer-type SF6 gas circuit breaker, overvoltage was low particularly during short arc times, and high only in the vicinity of the 0.5 cycle corresponding to maximum arc time. A digital calculation of overvoltage waveforms by using nonlinear arc voltage represented by base arc voltage and a normal function revealed that arccontained interruptions could be simulated very well.
