Abstract
G. Wilson´s method of spectral factorization (1969) is considered for generalization to the two-dimensional (2-D) case. For practical implementation, finite-order approximants to the 2-D spectral factors of infinite order are obtained. Although stability or convergence cannot be guaranteed in general, justifications are given for the success of the proposed generalization. Illustrative examples are given to support the conclusions
