Abstract
A direct numerical procedure associated with the finite element method is presented to evaluate in optical waveguides with any arbitrary index profile and geometry, the propagation constant of a given mode and its first and second derivatives, from which the dispersion parameters may be obtained. Numerical differentiation from the computed values of the propagation constant at different frequencies, and the related problems of accuracy, may be avoided
