Abstract
The authors present the formulation of a 2-D beam propagation method for weakly guiding 3-D structures. The waveguide itself may have any cross section, provided that the propagating field has a quasi-cylindrical shape. The dimensional reduction is carried out by using the azimuthal effective index method. The applicability of the method is discussed and some examples are given
