Abstract :
Crystal-field split energy levels for the5 F and5 I ground configuration of Pm3+in LiYF4and radiative transition probabilities between these levels were calculated. An electric dipole φ-transition dominates and suggests a CW Pm3+laser is possible unless Pm3+-Sm3+-Nd3+energy transfer quenches the Pm5+flurorescence. This dominating transition is from the5 F_{1}\\Gamma _{1} at 12444 cm-1to an5 I_{5} \\Gamma _{2} at 1786 cm-1
