Electricity is often featured in the media for its role in causing pollution: acid rain and the greenhouse effect are two side effects of power generation. However, electricity plays a vital role in the treatment of many liquid and gaseous effluents and in new techniques that are being developed to recycle wastes and recover valuable resources from them.
