Optical fibres are rarely used to communicate over distances of 10 m or less because of higher costs and architectural changes that would be required. A project called Olives (optical interconnects for VLSI and electronic systems) has been devised to develop the optical components for optical interconnections over distances between 10 mm and 10 m.
