Abstract :
Describing function analysis is used to predict limit cycles in a single-area hydroelectric power system. Backlash, rate limits, and a detailed hydrogovernor turbine model are considered in the analysis. The results provide evidence of the existence and nature of very low frequency limit cycles. Such theoretical evidence contrasts with early simulation studies and helps clarify anomalies among more recent observations and simulation studies.
