Abstract
Axial-field permanent magnet d.c. machines are being evaluated for a wide range of new applications. The development of criteria for the selection of all machine parameters is described, leading to a computer program that produces a realistic design given only the desired power, speed, voltage and diameter as input data. The performance of an electric wheelchair drive motor is discussed, designed by the program for maximum power density, using SmCo5 magnets.
