Abstract :
In this report transfer functions have been introduced to characterize a damper itself, on a string of infinite length and then at some distance from the span end. The effectiveness of a damper or an arrangement of several dampers can be quantified by two parameters: |Ãres| which is the magnitude of the resulting reflection transfer function Ãres, and |¿in| which is the magnitude of the "inlet" transfer function ¿in. There exists a simple relationship between |Ãres| and the energy dissipated by the dampers. This can be used in connection with the energy balance principle.
