Abstract
In 1975, American Electric Power (AEP) installed its first remote multiplexing and telemetry system at a generating station. On an experimental basis and in parallel with conventional control, this system was utilized to monitor the status of a portion of the plant´s coal handling facilities. This system was kept under extensive surveillance for a period exceeding one year, at which time it was deemed acceptable for use. Since that time, similar systems have been incorporated into plant design. This paper will review these systems, where they are used, why they are used, their performance and the design criteria for their use.
