Abstract :
This paper reviews the various aspects that are important in understanding the electron-neutral interaction in gas discharges. On the basis of these principles, the target particle classification is presented. Total scattering cross sections are presented in a number of gases, and the principle features of each are explained. The role of cross sections in practical applications is briefly elucidated
