Abstract
The performance of passive optical networks using centralised light sources is impaired by interferometric noise caused by two different components of the Rayleigh backscattering. An accurate theoretical analysis of the effect is presented, which accounts for the modulation spectra of high bit rate signals. The experimental results obtained show good agreement with theory.
