Abstract :
It is shown that the fifth quadrant operation of the shunt capacitor compensated transmission line is dynamically stable, both with and without the voltage stabilizer. Unfortunately, before the economic advantages can be exploited, it is necessary to overcome the problem of subsynchronous resonance which is shown here to be unavoidable when operating beyond the second quadrant. This paper arrives at these conclusions through proofs of the operating limits for subsynchronous resonance and proofs of the stability limits.
