Abstract :
This paper proposes closed WKB formulas for cutoff frequencies and the propagation constant of weakly guiding optical fibers. For the sake of simplicity, only nondecreasing refractive profiles are taken into consideration. The formulas arise from an approximation of the WKB integral, which preserves the general validity requirements of the method.
