Abstract :
The minimum number of gyrators needed for the synthesis of a general nonbilateral n -port of prescribed scattering matrix S has long been unknown although a lower bound is r/2 , where r is the rank (necessarily even) of the skew part of S , that is, rank (S-S\´) . The synthesis procedure for lossless n -ports, due to Belevitch, reaches the lower bound r/2 . For a general n -port, however, the best known result is n and is not related to r . This paper shows that a general n -port is synthesizable with r/2 gyrators. A numerical example is given in the Appendix.
