Abstract
The only radio spectrum available for large scale data transmission is in the 900 mhz frequency range. A research project sponsored by EPRI was conducted on Long Island to demonstrate the feasibility of 900 mhz as the communication link for distribution automation functions, including load management. Results indicate that communication in the 900 mhz range is viable and a computer model to predict radio performance under varying conditions was successfully developed. The FCC has recently allocated 20 paired frequencies in the 928-953 mhz band for distribution automation use by utilities.
