Abstract :
A novel square-law demodulator with low input power requirements has been developed for use in ASK/FSK heterodyne optical receivers. 10-9 BER sensitivity better than -29 dBm was achieved for a 648 Mbit/s ASK signal with carrier scanned from 1 to 4 GHz. The flatness of the responsivity was better than +or-1 dB over the same input bandwidth.
