Abstract :
This paper describes studies conducted by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to evaluate the dc filter and smoothing reactor performance requirements necessitated by upgrading the Pacific HVDC Intertie system from ±400 kV to ±500 kV.1 The study objectives were to limit induced harmonic noise and ripple current to present levels and identify inherent resonant frequencies and the likelihood of their being excited. The performance of various filter configurations were analyzed under normal and contingency conditions. The study resulted in the definition of a filter configuration which would meet the stated objectives.
