Abstract :
A new type of airgap armature with spiral pancake coils is being developed, particularly for applications in large superconducting generators. The airgap armature significantly departs, both in construction and in design, from the conventional generator. Major design considerations in supporting the axial and tangential forces of electromagnetic and thermal origins in such an armature have been presented in this paper.
