A Different Approach to the Repair and Protection of Submarine Cable Systems

This paper relates the conclusions reached and practices developed over a period of more than ten years by personnel responsible for repairs of a twelve mile long submarine cable across the Long Island Sound. Insufficient restoration plans usually require that a problem of repairing submarine cables in the hostile environments be turned over to a contractor or manufacturer-installer rather than being progressed by the Utility. Such action relieves the owner of maintaining the expertise and skills otherwise required; but the price is high in both the fees and the loss of control, particularly in scheduling, since the talent, worldwide, for a complete repair effort is quite thin.
