Abstract
This paper is aimed at studying the capacitance switching phenomenon in a six-phase power transmission system and comparing it with that of a three-phase system. The study is conducted by first deriving the analytical expressions for the transient recovery voltages associated with capacitance switching for three representative situations, and then verifying these analytical results by simulating the six-phase system on the digital computer using an electromagnetic transients program. The results indicate that the capacitance switching imposes less onerous transient recovery voltages on a six-phase system when compared to a three-phase system.
