Abstract :
Northern Electric´s overhead system consists of approximately 5500 km of 20 kV line and 5000 km of 11 kV line. Both systems are subjected to the same range of fault causes which afflicts most overhead systems. The author assesses protection performance and continuous monitoring and discusses systems which will result in optimum performance of the two networks. Systems looked at include a group-fused system; variable fuse size and triggered gap systems; automatic sectionalisers; and mixed solid fused systems
