Abstract
A 5,000 meter fiber optic channel integral to the ground wire of a 115 kV transmission line has been installed and is operational. Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation (RG&E) has installed a composite overhead conductor manuf´actured by Phillips Cables Limited between two major transmission stations to provide communications for protection, metering, and control. This paper discusses the economic justification, equipment, construction techniques, and testing associated with the installation and commissioning.
