Abstract :
Some of the dynamic effects that occur in large local area networks (LANs) are described. Effects are considered at three different levels: single-network segments, connections between adjacent segments, and problems that appear only in large networks. To a large extent, the discussion is based on recent experience within the internet community. However, the observations should apply, in a general way, to large networks using other protocols as well.<>
