Abstract
A study of the effect of line traps on short line fault transient recovery voltages is presented. For certain conditions, line traps can cause the system transient recovery voltages (TRV) to be greater than what ANSI standards require a circuit breaker to withstand. Equivalent circuits for several types of line traps are given. An analysis is made of how the various types of line traps affect TRV. Several methods for reducing system TRV are considered.
