Abstract
The controversial question whether electron emission from a highly stressed cathode may reduce the withstand voltage of SF6 insulated gaps between very smooth electrodes has been examined experimentally by means of a special model containing a vessel, which could be either evacuated or filled with SF6 gas. The results indicate, that the limitation of the withstand voltage at field strengths above 20 kV/ mm was caused by field emission of electrons from the cathode.
